And, why would you do that (make a powder horn out of a steers horn)? Well, simple answer is, "my brother asked me to and I thought it was kind of a neat idea. Let's not forget the fact that I love to paint on the "un" ordinary things in life, that are kind of there for the taking. I mean if you are just going to throw it away, it quite possibly may have another use. Yes, reuse at least once before you throw it out and have fun doing it.

Short of an ordinary experience it was not. First off, I forgot that when working with horns, you really need to wear a mask. That stuff smells just awful when your are sanding it and more specifically sawing it. Also, since I don't stencil and everything is freehand, painting on curved items and trying to get placement and depth to look right can be difficult. At least for me anyway. Every once in a while, I like to get away from painting flowers and my favorites are deer, wolves and birds - still working on perfecting them. I am not that great at painting them, but I keep practicing thinking that some day, I might just get one that I think is pretty good! The horns have been drilled and fitted so that one could actually use these if they so chose to as powder horns. The next ones I do (I hope I get to do some more) I have some different plans for and a they are going to take a whole lot more work and be a possibly a bit more intricate in design. We shall see - stay tuned!
